What is Sangria?
Sangria is a traditional Spanish wine punch that is typically made with red wine and fruit. But these days there are hundreds of variations on this delicious beverage! This red, white, and blue sangria is light, sweet and perfect for any patriotic celebration! You could serve it at a variety of occasions, such as:
- 4th of July or Memorial Day
- Summer cookout
- Pool party
- Or just whenever!
Ingredient Notes
You just need a few ingredients to make this red white and blue sangria!
Pinot Grigio - Just use your white wine! I love something light and crisp like Pinot Grigio, but you could also use something like Riesling for a sweeter sangria!
Vodka - This is optional, but I love adding a little bit of vodka for extra boozy sangria. I love using the Ketel One Botanicals Grapefruit and Rose! White rum would also be delicious.
Lemon Juice - A splash of lemon juice just helps balance the sweetness of the fruit.
Sugar - This is completely optional! But you can add some sugar for a little extra sweetness. I'd omit if you're using a sweet wine or Sprite! You could also use simple syrup instead!
Soda - Any type of club soda or seltzer water will work in this sangria, just use your favorite! You could also use soda like Sprite, but be sure to omit the sugar!
Red Fruit - I use a combination of red fruits like strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and watermelon! But the options are endless!
Blue Fruit - Blueberries are the classic choice, but you could also add in blackberries too!
White Fruit - Use apple or pear slices to cut out little white stars!
Mint - This is optional, but I love the flavor of mint with berries. It does slightly take away from the red white and blue color scheme though.
The complete list of ingredients and amounts is located in the recipe card below.
How to Make Sangria
Use small star cookie cutters to cut apple slices and watermelon into star shapes! Or just add apple and watermelon chunks to the sangria instead.
Add all of the fruit to a large pitcher.
Add in the wine, vodka, lemon juice, (and sugar if using), and stir gently to combine.
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to allow the fruit time to infuse the sangria.
Add in the soda immediately before serving.
Serve over ice and don't forget to ladle some of the fruit into each glass!
Sangria Serving Tips
Don't let the fruit go to waste! Make sure to ladle some fruit into each glass and serve the red white & blue sangria with little skewers or patriotic drink umberellas I also love these fun paper straws!
Recipe FAQ's
Sangria is best served within 24 hours, but keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge. You’ll notice the color of the fruit will become pale the longer you keep it and the flavor will intensify and become sweeter over time.
Fresh berries are prettier, but frozen work well too!
