This homemade chai spice mix is a warming blend of spices that's perfect to use in all your favorite fall and winter desserts! I love using this chai spice mix in these chai latte cupcakes and these chai spice cookies!

You usually can't buy a pre-made chai spice mix at the grocery store, so I love making my own!

Ingredient Notes

You just need 6 spices for this homemade chai spice mix!

chai spice mix ingredients.
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Cardamom
  • Nutmeg
  • Cloves
  • Allspice

Make sure all the spices you're using are fresh so that your chai spice blend stays fresher longer!

The best part of making your own spice mixes is that you have complete control! Don't like cloves? Just leave them out or reduce the amount! Love ginger? Add a little extra!

How to Make Chai Spice Mix

This hardly counts as a recipe, because all you have to do is mix together all the spices!

I like to sift everything together 2-3 times to make sure it's well combined and doesn't have any clumps.

Then transfer to an airtight container (like a small glass jar) and store with the rest of your spices for up to a year!

Recipe FAQ's

How long does chai spice mix last?

Most spices will last 2-3 year if stored properly, but they do lose their potency over time. So I recommend replacing your spices every year!

How do I substitute this chai spice mix in other recipes?

If a recipe calls for "chai spice" (or another similar spice blend like pumpkin spice) you can use this spice blend in the exact amount listed! But if a recipe calls for a list of spices (like 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp nutmeg, ½ tsp ginger, and ½ tsp cloves) you can simply add together all the spices and use the total amount of chai spice (so 4 tsp chai spice in this example).

How to Use Chai Spice Mix

There are so many fun ways to use this chai spice blend!

  • Holiday baking! I love substituting chai spice mix in fall and winter desserts like my apple cider bundt cake or cinnamon rolls!
  • Spice up classic desserts! You can dress up banana bread, coffee cake, or muffins with a pinch of chai spice!
  • Add to drinks! Obviously a classic chai latte is great, but this chai spice also adds some great fall flavor to drinks like a spiced latte, hot chocolate, or eggnog!
